Laziness is a sin that Proverbs continually talks about because it is unlike God. People who are undisciplined will often be people who can fall into the category of laziness. So, the encouragement is to be like the ant.

Proverbs 6:6 Go to the ant, you sluggard; consider its ways and be wise!

The ant is a model of wise activity. The ant’s activity is rarely for its own personal good but for the good of the community or colony of other ants.

What a great picture for us and the Church.

Sure, we are to work for our own personal survival for our families, but we are also to work for the community of believers, the Bible calls the body of Christ - Christ’s Church. We are not just to work and provide for ourselves, but we have a spiritual responsibility to provide for God’s family.

Our Lord is the perfect example of that: My food, said Jesus, is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work, John 4:34.

Let us be diligent as the Lord was. He finished his work on the cross, yet he has given us his Spirit, his Word, each other and resources and gifts to do the work of the gospel through his church.
