When do you pray? What do you pray about?
Do you pray only with other Christians? When you are rostered for online church? Or when you are desperate?
What do you pray about? Finding lost car keys? Getting the best parking space? Needing help in a sticky situation?
I ask these questions as an opportunity to reflect and consider our prayer practices.
In Jonah 2, we see Jonah prays. When? Well he’s hit rock bottom and residing in the mouth of a large fish. He is desperate, alone and needing impossible help. It is ok to pray in times like this, but we have God that is always with us, ready to step in and intervene. So are we talking to God even when we’re not desperate? What about when times are good?
So what does Jonah pray about? He needs to be saved from death. He’s in the most impossible situation. And to get out of it, is impossible. Yet Jonah believes and prays to God who can do the impossible. He can not only save Jonah from death, but also forgive Jonah of his sins.
Jonah can have a second chance.
What happens when we pray? We can pray to God whenever and ask for big things.
We can pray for a second chance.
