“Anyone who runs ahead and does not continue in the teaching of Christ does not have God; whoever continues in the teaching has both the Father and the Son.” 2 John 9
Some little girls, so I’m told, become veritable experts at getting into their mother’s makeup stash. Even from an early age they want to be ‘grown up’. The obsession with running ahead of their age takes hold. It seems that little girls don’t want to remain little girls but instead grow up as fast as possible. I’ve even heard parents say things like, “She’s 5, going on 15.”
The desire for more however, isn’t just limited to little girls. In our lives so often we are looking for that next big thing and sometimes that takes our focus off what is most important.
Our faith is something that grows, but sometimes, we just don’t feel like it is growing fast enough. Back when John wrote this letter there were a group of people who felt like they had ‘outgrown’ the faith centred on Christ. Instead they were looking for the next thing. Racing ahead.
God’s word provides all that we need for salvation, all that we need to guide us in true faith. Our faith is focused on Jesus Christ, the cross on which he died for our sins and the tomb from which he rose from the dead. We can never outgrow what Christ has done and the teachings he gives us. Keep coming back to them.
